we seem to have an abundance of vegetables growing we didn't plant.
what at first resembled cosmos are simply carrots, minty leaves tucked in between . . .
and crawling squash although we haven't sowed it in years,
but we love mysterious vegetables.
sweet peas, however, were planted, abundantly.
blue shift, painted lady, old spice, erewhon, marion, wiltshire ripple,
mollie rilestone, lady grisel hamilton . . .
these, i check on first thing in the morning,
while the water boils.
the lemon scent is especially sweet then. reminds me of days in the flower shop.
or cleaning spray.
the other annual i seek before coffee are my black bachelor's buttons,
aubergine fringe with pale green stems. they're tall & slightly fragile,
like the ruffled sweet peas . . but different.
it's a heartbreaker to accidently bend one and watch it fall from the sky to the ground . . .
i'm thinking about some new work,
rusty, grey, minty, black,
i might even start to sew again
with such autumnal summer feelings
and all.

Sylvia would be in heaven in your garden. She has picked her way through the neighborhood. Flowers are her comfort when she's sad.
